    Message from the President:

It has been my sincere honor and privilege to serve on the board for the past 10 years, with the last two as president. This will be my last message as president and I will be ending my time on the board as of July 1st. On that day, the board will begin anew and commence with planning the 2018-2019 season. There are now step-by-step protocols for each event in place which will create a springboard for the new board to hit the ground running. So, be ready to mark your calendars by late summer for the announcements of the next season of events!

I’d like to take a moment to give thanks to the board that I have worked with this year as you’ve all done an incredible amount of work to make events seamless for the members.  Each of you has brought new ideas to the table, and have been extremely generous with your time in learning new jobs, taking on new roles, and becoming more and more familiar with the details that are the San Diego Flute Guild. Cheryl, Farah, Lionel, Alina, Alan, Pam, Suzy, and Sierra: you are some of the most well organized and responsive and loving people I have been able to work with, and I appreciate each of you immensely.

Teachers: thank you for your tireless efforts and skill at producing the next generation of flutists!  Students, thank you for your endless time in the practice room, and for your eager hearts pouring through your performances during recitals and competitions; your hard work does not go unnoticed!  Flute enthusiasts: thank you for your continued participation, and love of the flute, and thank you for your display of camaraderie and support of one another in this community! To each of the members of the flute community, it has been a joy to watch the guild grow and flourish during these years, and I’m sure it will continue to expand in new and exciting ways in the future. Most importantly, I wish to thank all of you for helping to create something beautiful in this world, whether performing for an audience or just playing music for yourself. You are truly part of something special.

Have a wonderful summer, and thank you again for all that you do to support the guild,

    Kate Prestia-Schaub

    SDFG President

    Message from the President

    Dear San Diego,

Thank you so much to all who were a part of the spring festival!  We had a wonderful time, and are so pleased to announce the winners below!  Wilfrido Terazzas was incredible with the flute players - leading them through warm ups with colors and intense listening exercises, and also taking members through a sound painting exercise in the afternoon!  Carol Wincenc dazzled at the recital, and was an incredible teacher to the 4 masterclass participants! Renee Tresko did a fabulous job hosting the hospitality table, and Alan was the Master Organizer of the Exhibitors!  We appreciated the volunteers who came out in droves to make this a successful event, and run smoothly all day long!  The judges comments were fantastic, and the students!!!  Wow!  The students pulled out all the stops in competitions.  I know all of us teachers were very proud!  The Winners' Rectal was last weekend, and featured 16 festival winners. Thank you to Alina Freiman Steele for organizing the event, and to Cheryl Bretsnyder for assisting!

We're looking forward to our last two events of the 2017-2018 season, so check them out and register below!

Have a great end of the school year, and we'll chat again in June!

    Oak Valley Middle School
Registration Deadline TODAY: January 7th, 2018

As you know, the Chamber Fest is an opportunity for students of all ages to come together and create a small ensemble of 2 or more instruments (at least one of which being flute). These ensembles are judged by two professional flutists and will receive feedback and a medal. There will be no keyboard or piano available.

This year, we are re-defining our divisions to streamline the event further:

Annual Winona Grant Holiday Flute Choir Concert

    Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm
    Westminster Presbyterian Church
    1500 W. Juniper St.
    Escondido, CA 92025

    Dear Beloved SDFG Members,

Can you believe it's already November? Holiday Time! We have a wonderful tradition here at the Guild, of doing a Holiday Concert very early in the Christmas Season, so as not to interfere with other activities. Because the Holidays is all about getting together with friends and family, and caroling - we would love ALL our membership to participate in a flute choir to enjoy together the music of the season.

    SDFG Sponsored Choirs:
Don't know of a flute choir to participate in? Come join ours! Just 4 rehearsals - not a huge time commitment, but a true highlight of the year. We're just sayin'!

This year we have added two rehearsal locations, so that travel distance isn't as much of an issue. Both locations will practice the same music and then come together to the dress rehearsal as one choir.

Rehearsals have already begun and will continue on Fridays in South Escondido, and Sundays for South County Folks. Registration is quick and easy online (no cost), but if you don't have time to do that, no worries, just show up! (We will have you fill out a form at rehearsal...)

    North Rehearsals:
at the home of Renee Tresko
    Fridays: Nov. 3, 10, 17
    Intermediate: 6:15-7:30 pm
    Advanced: 7:30-8:45 pm

    South Rehearsals:
at the home of Suzy Farber
    Sundays: Nov. 5, 12, 19
    Intermediate: 6:15-7:30 pm
    Advanced: 7:30-8:45 pm

You will need to register online to receive location information and a special Gate Code for the South Rehearsals.  Please complete your online registration form by November 9th.

    Teacher Choir
Speaking of Great Times, we need YOU to participate in our Teacher Choir to perform at the Holiday Concert! We're only planning on just two rehearsals - Saturday evenings, Nov. 18 and Dec. 2 at Renee's house. Well - they won't be your typical "rehearsal", but instead be a time where we can socialize and connect over hors d'oeuvre and wine or other refreshments. And what a great example to our adult and student membership when teachers can come together in camaraderie and excellence in musicianship! So come on out and join us! It would be nice to know how many to plan for, so if you could let us know no later than Nov. 10 whether you plan on coming, that would be great!

    Privately Organized Flute Choirs:
If you have a group of students - even duets and trios, who would like to perform, please register them as a group (no later than Nov. 19, please).

Register here to participate in any choir!

Suzy and I hope to see many of you this weekend! Don't know anyone, you say? That's the POINT! - Come and get to know someone new who shares your same passion for flute!

    Kind Regards,

    Renee Tresko and Suzy Farber

Ms. Wincenc continues more than a quarter of a century on the faculties of The Juilliard School and Stony Brook University having mentored and graduated countless rising, flute stars commanding principal flute positions in major symphony orchestras and university professorships. She is renowned for her popular series of etudes and flute classics, the "Carol Wincenc 21st Century Flute" published by Lauren Keiser/Hal Leonard Music Publishers (available on 'Amazon'). A longtime resident of New York City, she resides with her singer/songwriter son, Nicola Wincenc (Cavernsband.com). In Memoriam: Karen Strauss

It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of a long time SDFG member, friend and colleague, Karen Strauss.

For the last 29 years, Karen was a devoted music teacher who actively advocated maintaining band programs in Temecula and Murrieta Valley's elementary schools. Her success and devotion toward this end improved the lives of so many of our local students who had the good fortune to have Mrs. Strauss as their band teacher. As a teacher, Karen was known for her smile, her patience, her positive attitude and her delight in her students' success as musicians and scholars. She worked tirelessly to be sure every student practiced, and rewarded her classes every year by organizing a concert at Mulligan's Fun Center. After school, she gave private piano lessons from home. Some of her students have become music teachers themselves. Karen was very proud of her legacy of giving the gift of music to nearly three thousand students in her lifetime.

Karen was also a fine flutist who played with local and regional community bands and orchestras for many years. Karen played flute and piccolo in the community concert bands of Palomar Jr. College, Mt. San Jacinto Jr. College and the Temecula Valley Winds. She was also a member of the Silver Sounds Flute Ensemble and Orange County Flute Ensemble. Her favorite venues to perform at were the Wine Country Band Festival and Disneyland. Always a student of the instrument, she continued to take lessons and coaching sessions to maintain and improve her skill.

The world will not be quite as sweet without Karen in it, but her legacy and immortality will always live on through those she taught and all the lives she touched.
