    May Newsletter

    Wednesday, May 15, 2019

    Message from the President

I can't believe that our 2019 Spring Festival was a month ago! There were several times during the event that I looked around, proud of how the flute community came together in such a positive, encouraging way. I am so grateful to all of you who participated in some way in our largest event of the year.

We started the day with a wonderful warm up session by Alina Windell. Leone Buyse was masterful during her recital and gave such wonderful tips to the masterclass participants. The Young Artist winners performed beautifully and it was a joy to have the Orange County School of the Arts Flute Ensemble join us. What a polished performance they gave - I'm sure in no small part to the guidance of their director, Janelle Barrera! Thanks to all of the teachers who were in attendance and also helped prepare their students for competitions. We couldn't have done it without all the volunteers who helped things run smoothly and the adjudicators for their thoughtful comments for the competitors. A special thank you as well to our sponsors and exhibitors for their support and participation.

Thanks to all of you who helped make this event a success!

If you have any thoughts about the 2019 Spring Festival, email me at sandiegofluteguild@gmail.com. The SDFG Board wants to hear from you so we can continue to make all our events even better!

Wishing you a wonderful May and start to the summer,

    Farah Zolghadr, President

The weather is turning colder, which is a welcome respite from the hot summer months!

I was so excited to see many of you at our Annual Meeting of the Members and Fall Members' Recital! We had a wonderful mix of performers who all did a great job. Special thanks to SDFG board members Alina Steele and Lionel Avila for organizing our first event of the season.

Next up, we have our Holiday Concert (more details below!), Chamber Fest, and Spring Festival. Make sure to save the date for these events and pay close attention to upcoming registration deadlines!

With Thanksgiving coming up, I hope you will all join me in thanking this wonderful SDFG Board for working hard on our events this season and all of you for your support in creating a wonderful flute community in our area! Let's all reflect on this past year and move into the holiday season with a grateful spirit.

    Message From the President

    Dear San Diego,

I would first love to say hello to all of you and introduce myself as the new President of the San Diego Flute Guild! You may have seen me at events this past year as I served as 1st Vice President. Most recently, I was a coordinator for the 2018 SDFG Summer Camp, where 20 campers had an incredible experience learning from master teachers and playing in ensembles together.

A little about me: The flute has been a huge part of my life since the age of 10, when I first picked up the instrument. I received my D.M.A. in Flute Performance from the University of Miami in 2012, where I was a Mancini Fellow. One of the most important things to me is to share my love of the flute with others and cultivate an interest in the arts (whether it be performing, teaching, or supporting live music).

It is an absolute privilege to serve as President of this wonderful group and I cannot wait to share more about our programming for this coming year! If you have any thoughts to share with me as I start in this role, you can email me at:

    Summer Camp 2018

Last week, SDFG hosted a flute summer camp at Green Oak Ranch. We were joined by 20 campers who have had the opportunity to make music with each other. We were joined by the Featured Guest Artist, Seth Allyn Morris, and other guest artists: Janelle Barrera, September Payne, Maralyn Prestia, Alina Freiman Steele, and Renee Tresko. The camp was filled with numerous camp activities and the campers made new friendships and became better musicians. We look forward to the next summer camp!
