Over the past few weeks, we have been closely monitoring guidance from the local health department and the CDC to ensure the health and safety of all our participants in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, universities across the country have been taking measures to reduce the opportunity for this virus to spread on their campuses. Changes have happened rapidly, with situations changing by the hour. Unfortunately, Point Loma Nazarene (our venue) has let us know that they aren't allowing events with more than 100 people on their campus through mid-April.

Instead of cancelling the Spring Festival entirely, the Board has decided to move forward with an innovative new format for this year’s event so participants can participate virtually instead of in person. We know that many of you look forward to our festival each year and hope that you will be able to join us online for a series of workshops on April 5th. A full schedule and details on how to attend will be available in the coming days.

If you have already purchased a ticket to attend the Spring Festival as a non-competitor, your purchase will be refunded in the coming days. Competitors have been emailed separately with plans for continuing these competitions in a new format where applicable.

We’re excited that by moving to this online format on April 5th, we’re able to reach even more people than we could have previously. I look forward to our next in person event where we can come together as a flute community.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns by emailing sandiegofluteguild@gmail.com.

Happy New Year from San Diego Flute Guild! Read the newsletter to find out our upcoming events in the spring and a recap of our 2019 Holiday Concert!

    January Newsletter

    Message from the President

I can't believe it, but 2020 is here! I hope you have all had a wonderful start to the new year. For us, the new year brings our Chamber Fest in January and our largest event of the year, Spring Festival, in April. We've been hard at work preparing for these events and I hope many of you will be able to attend! It's also that time where I start to ask for volunteers for our Spring Festival. We can't do it without the generous spirit of all our volunteers to keep things running smoothly. Please consider taking some time on April 5th to help with a task or two. Even an hour goes a long way to helping us ensure a successful event.

We're also looking for sponsors for our Spring Festival. If you have a business (or a connection to one) and are able to support us with a monetary donation or one of a good or service for our scholarship raffle, please email us. As a non-profit, anything helps to offset the significant costs of our annual event.

I wish you all the best as we start 2020 and hope to see you at an event soon!

    Farah Zolghadr, President

    Event Recap:
2019 Winona Grant Holiday Flute Choir Concert

It was great to see the large crowd of family and friends in the audience! We also raised $262 for our Scholarship Fund!

A huge thanks to all the performers and an extra special thanks to Julia Barnett, Cheryl Bretsnyder,  Valerie McElroy, Renee Tresko, and Elena Yarritu, who brought their flute ensembles.

Check out our Facebook page for some photos from the event!

February 1st Deadline for Young Artist and Youth Artist Competitions

All Young Artist and Youth Artist competitors must submit their preliminary round recording by February 1st. Remember that you have to be a member of SDFG before registering for the competition. Be sure to read all requirements closely for the recorded round and email us with any questions.

*Note: After this newsletter was sent, the deadline for Youth Artist Competition registration and recordings was moved to February 15th.

    Call for Spring Festival Proposals

Do you have an awesome warm up idea for our Spring Festival participants? We would love to hear from you! We're looking for someone to present a warm up appropriate for flutists of varying levels. This session will be 50 minutes starting at 8:30am. Compensation is provided, but we will not be able to cover any travel costs. Email us your proposal (including any handouts) no later than February 1st to be considered.

We may also have a couple of spots for other workshops on Sunday, April 5th, depending on the final schedule for that day. Message from the President

Instead of our normal December newsletter, I wanted to share details about our upcoming Spring Festival in April 2020. This is our largest annual event, with attendees from Southern California and beyond! We have a few changes this year, so be sure to look through this newsletter carefully. Our website also has up-to-date information available.

I wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season and will chat with you again in the new year!

    Farah Zolghadr, President

    The Basics

    When: April 5th, 2020

Where: The Cooper Music Center at Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego, CA

    Who will be there?

We're excited to have our 2020 Guest Artist all the way from the East Coast: Linda Chesis! She will lead a masterclass and give a recital on April 5th. We will also have pianist Makiko Hirata joining us again this year, performing with our Young Artist finalists and also with Linda Chesis at the recital.

We will also have a warm up artist (application details below) and several exhibitors with flutes, music, and accessories of all kinds.

We also hope you'll be there!

    What's new this year?

The biggest new thing is that we'll have more competitions on April 4th. This year, the final rounds for all Youth Artist Divisions will join the final round our top-level Young Artist Division on April 4th. The Youth Artist Divisions will also have a preliminary recorded round, with a recording due on February 1st. The prize money for our Youth Artist and Young Artist Divisions has been increased to reflect the level of talent we see for those divisions.

For the Youth Artist and Young Artist Divisions, selected finalists will be invited to perform in a Winners' Recital the next day, on April 5th. This is a wonderful opportunity for all who are invited to share their talents with a broader audience!

February 1st will be here before you know it, so be sure to plan for getting your audio recordings in for these divisions!

    What's Staying the Same?

We still have all our Festival Divisions on April 5th, along with exhibitors and classes during the day. At Point Loma, you can enjoy a wonderful lunch without even leaving campus, which is a huge bonus!

We encourage you to come and stay the whole day on this beautiful campus overlooking the ocean!

Okay, I want to get involved. How can I do that?

    1) Compete in one of our numerous competitions

    2) Attend as a non-competitor

    3) Volunteer (we need LOTS of those!)

    4) If you're a business owner, we're looking for exhibitors and monetary sponsors. Non-music sponsors are welcome! We can't put on our Spring Festival without your help!

    5) Spread the word - we want as many people to know about SDFG as possible, so like us on Facebook and share a post!

    6) If you're a flute teacher or performer, we're looking for help with listening to our recorded rounds as well as being our Spring Festival Warm Up Artist. To inquire about being a recorded round listening judge or send in a proposal for the Warm Up Artist, email us

We're so excited to present the 2020 Spring Festival to all of you! We can't wait to see you there!

    Message from the President

Summer is upon us and along with it is our annual Summer Flute Camp! All of us on the camp committee are so excited for this year's event, which will combine fun flute times with fun camp times (like a petting zoo, archery, swimming, and s'mores!).

It's also time for our annual elections. We have several positions open this year with some returning and some new faces. It's incredibly important in an organization like ours to have different experiences and viewpoints represented, which makes me especially excited for this group of candidates. The new year begins for board members on July 1st, so keep an eye out for information about 2019-20 programming that month!

As I near the end of the first year of being President of this amazing group, I want to thank all of you for your support and feedback. I've learned a lot this past year and appreciate so many of you for your kindness and for being so welcoming!

See you at the next event!

    Farah Zolghadr, President

Final Deadline June 10th: 2019 Flute Camp

The final deadline for summer camp registration is June 10th. We will be unable to accept late registrations. Our summer camp is open to flutists from 5th-12th grade and you do not need to be a member to attend. We're excited that guest artist Diana Morgan will be joining us for sessions on Friday and Saturday, including a masterclass, interactive class, and recital with solo and chamber music.

If you are in need of financial assistance, please email sandiegofluteguild@gmail.com for additional information.

We hope you join us for music, fluting, and other camp activities!
