National Flute Association - 2016 Convention Report

The convention was a huge success - due largely in part to our San Diego Flute Guild Members! We are so fortunate to have such a diverse array of talent right here!

Flûtes de Salon (Cindy Anne Broz, Ruth Washington Mayhew, Tracy Goodwin and Cathy Blickenstaff), as well as The WindSong Consort (with Cindy Anne Broz) performed on the "Chamber Music by Daniel Dorff: A 60th Birthday Celebration"concert!

Rose Lombardo, Sarah Tuck and Erica Peel performed brilliantly on the "San Diego Symphony Flutists!" concert which featured works by Katherine Hoover, 2016 NFA Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient.

Kate Prestia-Schaub performed the exhilarating work FlutePiece (written for SDFG member Maralyn Prestia) by Samuel Lancaster at the "20th-Century Standards and Not-So-Standards" concert.

Pamela Vleik Martchev performed beautifully on the "Remembrance and Healing" concert.

Cindy Anne Broz (with Cynthia Rugolo) performed three new duets for two flutes by Daniel Dorff on the Friday night "Exhibitors' Concert."

The "Music from Around the World" concerts featured Camarada: Beth Ross Buckley (with our beloved pianist Dana Burnett); Carlos Aguilar and Elena Yarritu also performed some eclectic Argentinian works!

Pam Vliek Martchev took the stage again with her husband Valentin Martchev with some chamber music at the "Flute and Friends" concert.

Lynn Schubert Clausen performed in a quartet with Sally Humphreys, Rita Linard and Maury Wilkinson on the program honoring their former teacher James Pellerite, recipient of this year's NFA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lori Bell and Janelle Barrera performed on the "Outside the Box: Jazz, Rock, Bluegrass, Alternative" concert, and brought the house down!

The Gala Concerto Concert Orchestra featured Erica Peel and Pam Vliek Martchev in the flute section. They sounded fantastic - singing and lyrical tones and impeccable intonation.

We had Cheryl Bretsnyder speak on a panel on "How to Run a Successful Flute Club."

Tenured SDSO member, Erica Peel, shared her experience on what it takes to win an audition in her presentation "Secrets of an Audition Winner: Five Steps to Success. Erica was also a judge for the Orchestral Audition and Young Artist Piccolo Competitions.

Special Events

Many of our student members participated in "Youth Flute Day” activities on Sunday. Each student got to play piccolo with the incomparable Peter Verhoyen and then enjoyed improvising with Project Trio! There were two flute choir reading sessions and even a low flutes petting zoo! We were so impressed with the students for getting up on stage and performing at the NFA!

Team Work

Cindy Anne Broz served as Local Arrangements Chair; Cheryl Bretsnyder and Judy Kelly served as Info Booth Coordinators; and Cindy Anne Broz and Kate Prestia-Schaub served as co-coordinators for the Youth Flute Day. Thank you team!

Lastly, and most importantly, the San Diego Flute Guild community showed up to volunteer with willing hearts, smiling faces and such generous spirit. The NFA board was very impressed with our local flutists and said that they couldn't have done it without you.

The San Diego Flute Guild leadership would like to congratulate everyone on their participation and for helping to make this such a memorable event!
