    Hello Members,

One of our members is looking for a flute choir teacher to teach a flute choir in Carlsbad. They currently have 4 flutists and have played as "Flutelicious" in Encinitas venues. They could meet in Karen's Carlsbad home. She already has a lot of flute choir music available. If you're interested in teaching this flute choir, please contact Karen Ryan: kmryan100@gmail.com

    Thank you!

Town & Country Resort and Spa, San Diego, CA
Designed for students ages 9 through 18

Youth Flute Day provides an opportunity for flutists ages 8 to 18 to experience concerts, workshops, and masterclasses. This enriching roster of events is sure to help promising young students learn, grow, and absorb knowledge that will aid them in their musical education. While designed for younger players, all convention attendees are welcome to participate—no additional fee required! This year features an exciting line up of activities:

    PROJECT Trio Improvisation Workshop

    9:00 – 10:45 am

Join Greg Pattillo and the PROJECT Trio (Eric Stephenson, cello, and Peter Seymour, bass) in this workshop, open to students of all ages. Whether you are a first-time improviser or have been jamming for years, the class will be fun and informative. There will be an emphasis on composition, improvisation, extended techniques, and building ensembles with any instrumentation.

    Piccolo for Kids

    9:00 – 10:45 am

From flute to piccolo in seven steps! Piccolo specialist Peter Verhoyen gives tips and tricks on how to cope with the differences in sound, finger movements, articulation, breathing, and vibrato between flute and piccolo. This piccolo workshop welcomes all piccolo players aged 8 to 18, but any young flutists interested in playing the piccolo are very welcome. Please bring your flute and/or piccolo!

    Junior High Flute Quartet Masterclass

    12:00 – 12:45 pm

Kathy Blocki teaches a quartet masterclass, with repertoire specifically geared toward younger players. Enjoy her masterful coaching and discover repertoire gems for young flutists from the NFA Pedagogy Committee’s new online quartet guide.

Low Flutes Workshop for Younger Flutists

    12:15 – 1:00 pm

See, hear, and play a smorgasbord of low flutes! Low flute specialists will be on hand to demonstrate, then invite students to play their instruments. It’s a low flute “petting zoo,” with everything from alto flutes to the eight-foot double contrabass flute! Hosted by the Low Flutes Committee. Preceded by a special performance by the winner of this year’s High School Soloist Competition, performing Gaubert’s Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando.

    Flute Choir Reading Session #3

    3:15 – 4:00 pm

This session presents music for younger players, amateurs, and those new to flute ensemble playing. Take part in three world premieres of music written just for this occasion! Led by Eileen Yarrison, conductor of the New England Flute Orchestra and other flute ensembles.

The Bach Air: An NFA Convention Tradition

    Sunday, August 14, 4:00  6:00 pm

To close out the convention, it has become a beloved tradition for all flutists to join together in playing the Bach “Air” from the Suite in D, conducted by the NFA president. This piece has been performed annually since the first convention in 1973, but it wasn’t until 1985 that all flutists played the piece together—a tradition that has continued ever since. Bring yourself and your flute—sheet music will be provided!
