    Happy August everyone! The 2017-2018 year is in full planning mode and the board is working hard to get each event ready for registration in the beginning of September!  For now, here is a list of the events for this year:

    Teachers' Luncheon

    Join us for an afternoon in Wine Country! All SDFG members who have students who may wish to participate in SDFG events in the 2017-2018 season are invited to the annual Teachers’ Luncheon. We will announce our season of events, and hand out packets with information on the upcoming events for the year, and review the benefits of membership so that you may share this information early with your students. Most importantly, however, the luncheon is a time to share your teaching stories, spend time together, and embrace the wonderful community of flute teachers in the greater San Diego area! Our greatest hope is that we can all come together to celebrate this exceptional group of dedicated and talented teachers and friends.

    This year, we’ve chosen to host the luncheon at the delightful Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula Wine Country! Wilson Creek features extensive picnic grounds, bocci ball, a warm and welcoming tasting room, and if you’re still hungry after lunch, you’re welcome to head to their Creekside Grille. If you’d like to purchase wine tasting tickets to enjoy during the meeting, they are $20 at the door which includes 5 tastings, a glass that you can take home, and $5 off of any purchase.

    The luncheon is free to attend, please RSVP no later than September 3rd.

    Palomar Mountain Flute Retreat ~ Guest Artist Day with Sarah Jackson

    We are so excited for camp this month!  Our staff and campers are getting ready for this fantastic summer opportunity.  If you are not able to attend for the full time, or you are a college student, adult, or teacher, and you would like to be a part of this exciting retreat, we invite you to come on Saturday, June 24th for one special day with guest artist Sarah Jackson!  Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided for all attendees and guests.  The fee is $50 and registration is open up to and including the day of the event, or until the limited seating is full.

    Palomar Mountain Flute Retreat

    Today is the last day to register and complete your payments for the San Diego Flute Guild's Palomar Mountain Flute Retreat!  There are still a few slots left, so be sure to register before registration closes tonight at midnight!  For more information on this year's summer camp, please check out the pages below.

    To make your final camp payment, please click here.  Payments will show up on your SDFG account within 24 hours of receipt.  




    Election for the 2017-2018 Board

    Each year, the San Diego Flute Guild has several open board positions requiring an official election.  Voting is now open for the 2017-2018 membership year.  The election will remain open until June 10th at which point we will announce the official new slate.  The board serves on a volunteer basis, coordinates events, manages the membership, maintains financial accounts, and generates ideas to assist in the development and reach of the guild to our members.   

    This year, the primary goal of the flute guild board is to introduce several new members to the team, as well as cross-train long standing board members in different board positions so as to make sure that no one person carries the only working knowledge of each responsibility and role.    

    The proposed slate of directors and officers for the next term is listed below.  Those in BLUE are up for election to become official members of the San Diego Flute Guild Board.

    2017 May Newsletter


    Thank you! (A letter from the president)

    Dear San Diego,

    This weekend passed at hurricane speed for me - I know it did for many of you as well.  I want to personally say thank you so much to all who came to the festival this weekend at our Spring Flute Festival.  It was so nice to meet so many new people, and have fleeting moments here and there with old friends as well.  Marianne Gedigian and Collette Valentine were incredible, right?!

    As much as I try to recognize each individual for their efforts at making this a fantastic event, there are simply too many names and I fear that I will leave someone out.  I will try to remember each group here, but please know how much everyone's individual contribution means to me, and also the entire San Diego Flute Guild Board.

    My deepest thanks to the board - Alan, Alina, Cheryl, Cindy, Erica, Lily, Pam, Ruth, Tracy, and Tina.  You did an amazing job this weekend organizing, doing the heavy lifting, and giving freely of your time for the ever expanding flute community!

    The Exhibitors came loaded with incredible products, I know several students of mine who got to come home with new instruments - what a difference a really high quality instrument makes!  I appreciate you making the time for our flute community.  Thank you to those who had to travel long distances, we know how much work it is to set these things up!

    The Adjudicators gave very well thought out comments, both helpful and encouraging, and gave up their chance to attend many festival events to listen to the huge number of competitors!  

    The Volunteers - Did you all know that there were over 80 jobs to be done at this festival?  All was covered from top to bottom - Everyone on the Registration team, the Hospitality Table, the Door Monitors, Competition Proctors, Collating Room helpers, Ushers, Competition Runners, Page turners, drivers, photographers, and especially the staff at PLNU made the day smooth as silk.  Special thanks go to Christine Fontes and Renee Tresko for their long hours!!

    The Sponsors, Steve Finley from Wm. S. Haynes and Flute FX made it possible to have Marianne and Collette perform, Adam Workman from Flutistry Boston was a sponsor for the Young Artist Competition, Paul Rabinov sponsored the Youth Artist Junior Division, and Jeff Bertrand from Bertrand's Music sponsored the Youth Artist Senior Division, and the lovely Cynthia Kelley at Flutacious sponsored the FUNdraisers and the Festival Divisions.   The financial support you provided to the San Diego Flute Guild really helps make this event truly special for our community, and we can only hope you can know how appreciative we are for your generosity!

    The pianists were on their toes all day long - many of them with more than 10 students each!  I don't know how you all learn that much music, incredible!  Thank you for being willing to run from room to room for hours on end.  Without your beautiful contribution, us flutists would be so lonely!  

    To the teachers, thank you for your tireless effort at preparing these lovely students with the ability to compete at such an incredibly high level.  The talent in this area is a deep pool, and each of you brings such a unique flavor which is reflected in your lovely students!

    The competitors!  Oh my goodness....  You are all so amazing to me!  I loved watching you prepare as you waited outside the room.  I watched you come out of the competition - some relieved, some overjoyed, and of course some disappointed.  But through all of it, I watched hard work and devotion in progress all day long.  Thank you for participating, for practicing, and most importantly for sharing your talent!  We are all so proud of each one of you!

    Of course, to our Artists - Cynthia Ellis and Laguna flutes - Marianne Gedigian and Collette Valentine - I am so inspired, and I know everyone who got the chance to hear you is as well.  Thank you from the bottom of each heart on the board for your artistry and generosity!

    Palomar Mountain Flute Retreat

    June 20-24, 2017 @ The Lodge at Palomar Mountain

    It is going to be a truly amazing event and heaps of fun for all!

    Sarah Jackson will be our Guest Artist on Friday June 23 (for week-long campers only) and also on Saturday June 24th. Saturday is a Guest Artist Day (see below). 

    The registration fee for the camp (ages 10-18) is $375. This includes all 5 nights/6 days: accommodations, all music (ensembles will be designed based on ability and will rehearsed by our professional camp staff; they will perform on the final day in concert for parents and families), meals, and two days of inspiration with Sarah Jackson (not to mention the daily attention with the winning personalities of our own professional staff )! Erica Peel, Ruth Washington-Mayhew, and Cindy Anne Broz will be the professional staff for camp. SDFG President, Kate Prestia-Schaub, will be there several evenings and on Saturday and Sunday. 

    The week-long camp is for ages 10-18. On Saturday, there is a Guest Artist Day which is open to adults (and others who are not able to attend the full camp). The fee for this day is $50 (this fee includes lunch and dinner, masterclasses/workshops and a concert performance by Sarah Jackson). 

    We encourage you to register as soon as possible if they want to secure a spot. At this point, out of 28 available spots, there are only 10 left.  We will have a waiting list once we hit our max limit of 28  campers (should someone who has a secured spot be unable to attend, this spot will be offered to the first on the waiting list and so forth).

    Dear Flutists, 

    The Spring Festival is now just two weeks away, and we are so excited to share a few details with you!  The competition registration is now closed, and all competition times have been sent to teachers to distribute to students.  Pre-registration will remain open until Friday, April 28th, and you can always purchase your festival pass at the event. If you're busy during the day, you can also purchase a ticket on site for the final Guest Artist recital with Marianne Gedigian.  

    This year, parking is free, and lunch is available in the dining hall, next door to the music building on campus at PLNU.

    We are still looking for 5 more volunteers to help out during the day - please email sandiegofluteguild@gmail.com if you can spare a few hours!

    We're also including information on our summer flute retreat in this newsletter.  Sarah Jackson will be our featured artist at summer camp this year.  There are only 14 spaces remaining.  Since it is first come first served, we recommend you register early.  If you can't attend the full camp, but want to spend a day hearing a masterclass and recital with Sarah Jackson, you may do so here.  

    We look forward to seeing you all at the end of the month, and again in the summer for camp!

    Marianne Gedigian

    Marianne Gedigian, Professor of Flute and holder of the Butler Professorship in Music at The University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music, was a regular performer with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for over a decade, including several seasons as Acting Principal Flute under Seiji Ozawa. As Principal Flute with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Acting Principal Flute with the Boston Pops, Ms. Gedigian has been heard on dozens of recordings and Evening at Pops television broadcasts as well as the nationally broadcast Fourth of July specials. She has also been heard on several John Williams’ movie scores, including Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List . In the 2000 – 2001 season, Ms. Gedigian was invited by Mariss Jansons to perform as Acting Principal Flute with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Her solo performances have taken her around the world, including recitals in Japan, Australia, England, and Armenia and she has appeared as concerto soloist numerous times with the Boston Pops Orchestra and with the Armenian Philharmonic performing her own transcription of the Khachaturian Violin Concerto. She was featured with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull fame in a performance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Ms. Gedigian has been a featured soloist and teacher at numerous National Flute Association conventions across the country, and is a frequent recitalist and teacher for flute clubs in the United States, Australia, Japan, and England.

    Ms. Gedigian has been first prizewinner in the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition, and the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition. She keeps an active schedule as a chamber musician as a founding member of the Boston-based Walden Chamber Players and was formerly a member of the Dorian Wind Quintet. Her solo recordings include Voice of the Flute and Revolution, both with pianist Rick Rowley.

    Ms. Gedigian is on the summer faculty at the Brevard Music Center, and has served on the faculties of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, The Boston Conservatory, the Round Top International Institute, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Ms. Gedigian’s teachers include Leone Buyse, Doriot Anthony Dwyer, Clement Barone, and Donna Olkowski.


    Colette Valentine


    Pianist Colette Valentine, one of the most active professional collaborative pianists in the United States, joined the faculty of the newly created Collaborative Piano Department at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music in the fall of 2008. She completed her DMA in Piano Performance at the State University of New York at Stony Brook with Gilbert Kalish after earning her BM and MM degrees from the University of Maryland where she studied with Nelita True. From 2000-2008 she was on faculty at Long Island University, C.W. She was also a faculty member at New Jersey City University from 1996-2008. In the summers, she joins other professional colleagues as a coach at the Interlochen Adult Chamber Music Camp in Michigan.

    Cynthia Ellis

    Cynthia Ellis is the solo piccolo player for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and also served as Principal Flute for the Opera Pacific Orchestra from 1995 until the company closed in 2009.

    She is a member of the Pedagogy Committee for the National Flute Association and served as Program Chair for the NFA's annual convention in Anaheim, CA in 2010. She has taught on the music faculty at the Claremont Graduate School, Pomona College, Biola College, and CSU Fullerton. She currently teaches applied music at Saddleback College and Hope International University and serves as music director for Laguna Flutes, a 25-member flute ensemble, through the Emeritus program at Irvine Valley College.  Piccolo is a specialty for Cindy: she writes the "Let's Talk Picc' column for Flute Talk Magazine and served as an artist in residence at the International Piccolo Symposium in July, 2013, held at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.

    Cynthia has recorded for television, motion picture and cartoon soundtracks as well as commercially released chamber music recordings. 'Beyond Beethoven", with the award winning Les Amis Musicalles trio, was released on the Centaur label, and Jeremy Beck’s  Flute Sonata is recorded on the CD "Never Final, Never Gone, on the Innova label. This sonata is also dedicated to her.

    Cynthia shares her home with Pacific Symphony trumpet player Tony Ellis and their three Labrador retrievers. Cindy enjoys fitness and is an active yoga enthusiast.     Young Artist Winners’ Recital

    The San Diego Flute Guild’s highly esteemed Young Artist Competition features the nations top artists aged 18 to 30. The preliminary recorded round took place in February 2017, and six finalists were selected to perform the live at the final round on Saturday, April 29th, 2017. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Prize Winners will perform one work from the compulsory competition repertoire listed below, and was selected by the final round adjudication panel. Entry tickets are only $2. Each winner will receive an awesome prize. All funds collected will benefit the SDFG Scholarship Fund. There is ONE PRIZE for each division.

    Bring Your Flute!

    Longest Note: A note will be selected at the contest. Contestants will compete in groups of 5 until the final round. Stop sounding and you are out! No circular breathing! Can you make it to the finals? Do you have the lungs to go all the way?

    Loudest Note: The note will be selected at the contest. How loud can you go?!? We will have the decibel meters on hand to see. Blow us away!

    Beat the Pro: Do you have what it takes to beat a Pro? Professionals will be on hand to test your skills. Can you outlast them in a longest note competition? You never know, you could beat a Pro!

    Two Guys One Flute: Guys or gals are okay for this test of skill. Bring your own music. Can you and a friend play it on one flute? One will blow while the other manages the keys. The best performance wins. By the way, laughing while performing is considered poor form.

    Purchasing a raffle ticket will help build the San Diego Flute Guild’s Scholarship Fund! A limited number of scholarships are available for members for lessons, assistance for payments for SDFG Events, or in certain cases towards the purchase of a new instrument. Tickets can be purchased at the info booth for $1 per ticket, 20 tickets for $15, and 30 tickets for $20. Drop your ticket into the basket for the raffle you’d like a chance at winning, and prizes to be given away at the awards ceremony at 5:00 pm in Crill Hall after the final recital.

    Palomar Mountain Flute Retreat

    June 20 – 25, 2017
    With Guest Artist Sarah Jackson

    Guest Artist Information:

    June 23rd (Friday)

    Sarah Jackson will offer classes and presentations for 28 campers. Students wishing to perform for Sarah Jackson on Friday, June 23rd, should bring a prepared piece to camp.  There will be an audition held on Wednesday, June 21st, at which five students will be selected to perform.  Selection will be based on preparation, and will represent differing levels.

    June 24th (Saturday) - Guest Artist Day

    Ms. Jackson will offer classes and presentations for campers and Guest Artist Day attendees during the day and a concert in the evening featuring solos works from the flute and piccolo repertoire and ensemble pieces performed with the Camp Coordinators/Staff.

    Camp Staff:

    Full-time overnight and day staff will include Camp Coordinators/Staff: Erica Peel, Ruth Washington-Mayhew, and Cindy Broz. Special guests include Kate Prestia-Schaub as well as 2 college aged Camp Staff Assistants. Staff to Camper ratio: 1/5

    Planned Activities:

    Daily Warm-Ups, Daily Masterclasses, Musical Games, Educational Presentations, Craft Activities, Ensemble Rehearsals/Preparation for SDFG Summer Flute Camp Concert.

    Eligibility:

    • Open to students Grade 5 thru Grade 12.
    • Students do not need to be members of San Diego Flute Guild.
    • There are only 28 spaces available, so be sure to register early as space is first come first served, and are filling up fast.
    • A waiting list will be opened once these 28 spots are filled.

    Registration Information:

    • Registration for The Palomar Mountain Flute Retreat must be received by May 15th, 2017.
    • Campers may secure a spot with a down payment of $100 prior to the registration deadline, but payment in full must be received by May 15th, 2017.

    Dear Flutist,

    With all of the rain, it has been a beautiful spring.  I've never seen it so green, and with so many wildflowers!  I hope each of you will get the chance to enjoy the weather, and the outdoors.   The March Newsletter contains a few more details for spring festival, but if you need the full line up of festival details, please see the February Newsletter.


    Spring Festival 

    Memberships:
    If you or your students are planning on entering any of the festival competitions, the first two weeks of March is a good time to make sure all memberships are active.  Teachers of participating students are encouraged to become members as well.  All competitors are required to become members, and can do so here.  To check on memberships, please log in to check the status here, or as always, please feel free to email us at any time.

    Competition Registration:
    Once memberships are all current, then competition registration can begin. The deadline for registration is April 1st.  All registration information must be accurate for students to be scheduled for competition.  Please make sure you have all of the following information before beginning the registration process: 

    • Teacher's name and email
    • Accompanist's name and email (there are no scheduling requests for pianists and they should be available all day)
    • Competition Division(s)
    • Composer / title of their selected pieces

    Festival Masterclass:
    If you are interested in performing for our amazing guest artist, Marianne Gedigian, you may apply as a member by April 1st.  We will be awarding 4 outstanding flutists with the opportunity to perform, and more information can be found here.



    Spring Festival Volunteers:
    We are looking for student and parent volunteers for the festival.  We need helpers with everything from manning the information booth, collating the awards and medals, room monitors, check in and registration table, runners, and more!  All students will receive community service hours.  Parents, if you're not sure what to do while your child attends the event, please consider helping out!  If you or your friends, family, or neighbors may be interested in receiving the community service hours, please email us.

    Spring Festival Advertising:
    We are now collecting artwork for advertising in our spring festival program book.  All ads will reach over 200 flutists and families who attend this event.  Additionally, all ads will run on our website until September 1st, 2017.  Proceeds from advertising go towards our Scholarship fund which assists student members with lessons, instrument purchases, and participation in events.     SDFG Member Pamela Vliek Martchev is hosting a flute recital and Masterclass with Seth Allyn Morris on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:30 PM in Smith Recital Hall at San Diego State University.  Dr. Morris will be performing works by Mozart, Bach, Blavet, Paganini and Boehm with pianist Karen Follingstad. This event is generously sponsored by SDSU and WM. S. Haynes Flutes.

    Spring Festival Edition

    Dear Flutists,

    The biggest event that the San Diego Flute Guild hosts each year is the Spring Festival.  We are looking forward to sharing our many flute events with you including a masterclass and recital by our special guest artist Marianne Gedigian, the Laguna Flutes ensemble led by Cynthia Ellis, and the Young Artist Competition Winners' Recital.  This email is filled with tips and tricks to help you get registered correctly, and will keep you informed about the changes to the 2017 festival.  All of the festival web pages contain valuable information so please click on the links provided to familiarize yourself with the event.  And as always, don't hesitate to email with any questions you may have.

    YAC Tips:
    #1.  The recorded round deadline is coming right up!  If you are competing in our Young Artist Competition, please make sure your membership is active, your registration is complete, and your recordings are emailed on time.  

    #2.  When you register, please be sure to include a 300 character bio (not 300 words) in you membership profile.  If selected as a finalist your bio will be used in the program book. If you have already registered, and you would like to double check the length of your bio, you can do that at any time by logging into the website, and viewing your member profile. Biographies longer than 300 words will be cut and edited accordingly.

    Festival Masterclass:

    Application Deadline: Saturday, April 1st
    Masterclass Date: Sunday, April 30th


    Each year during the Spring Festival, 4 flutists are chosen to perform for our featured guest artist. Applicants may perform flute or piccolo solos, with or without piano, and any orchestral excerpt.  We look forward to receiving your applications!

    Masterclass Application Tips:
    #1. Priority is given to those who have not performed at a festival in previous years.

    #2.  Students should have their current teacher submit an emailed recommendation telling us a little bit about the applicant to assist in our decision. 

    #3.  Shortly after the application deadline, the board will review each of the applicants, and select 4 performers and an alternate. Selected performers will have a week to complete payment and confirm that they will be participating before their request is given to the alternate. 



    Competitions:

    Competition Registration Deadline: Saturday, April 1st
    Festival Divisions, Youth Artist Divisions, and Specialty Divisions: 
    Sunday April 30th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm


    Competition Registration Tips:

    #1.  You will need to be logged into our website, and your membership will need to be active in order to register for any SDFG competition.  You may check your membership status at any time by logging into the website and clicking on your Member Profile.


    #2.  Participants may not enter both a Youth Artist division and a Festival division.  However, participants mayenter a Festival Division OR Youth Artist, and also any/all of the available Specialty Divisions (Orchestral and Piccolo division(s)).

    #3.  A live pianist is required for all pieces with written accompaniment or piano reductions except for the Orchestral Audition Division.  The Orchestral division should not include a pianist for the required concerto. For festival divisions and the piccolo division, Smart Music, or other pre-recorded accompaniment may be used only upon special request. (Email us with your specific request).

    #4.  Be sure to check the time limits on your chosen competition division on the competition page before your choose your repertoire. For most divisions, we request that competitors not take repeats.

    #5.  The specialty divisions with no age limits (Orchestral and Piccolo) are for non-professionals of any age.  Teachers and adults who make their living playing the flute are not eligible to compete, but are eligible to play and receive comments only.

    #6. Teachers do not register and pay for their students as they have done in the past. Instead, students register themselves, and can pay directly through PayPal. 

    #7.  Please note that there are no scheduling requests, students and pianists should be available between 8 am and 4 pm on Sunday, April 30th.

    #8. Please be sure that you're filling out the registration form accurately and completely. (For example, if you are registering for a Youth Artist Division, please make sure you are entering the repertoire in the Youth Artist repertoire fields, rather than the Festival Division or Specialty Division repertoire fields). Please explore the competition page for all of the guidelines and to become familiar with each competition division so that you are sure to register for the correct competition.  
    You will need the following required information before registration: 
    • Teacher name and email
    • Accompanist name and email 
    • Competition Division(s)
    • Repertoire title (including movement name & movement number)
    • Composer name (first initial and last name)
    • You'll need to let us know whether or not you intend to perform on the winners' recital on May 13th (See tip #9 below)

    #9.  The Flute Guild will host a Winners' Recital on Saturday, May 13 at 2:00 pm at the Coronado Public Library.  If you are chosen as a gold medalist in a festival division, or prizewinner in the Youth Artist or Specialty Divisions, you are eligible to perform in the winners' recital.   Before you register, please check your calendars, and check with your pianists to see if you are available to participate, and then state your intention to perform, or not to perform on your registration form.  By checking the intent to perform box on your registration, you will automatically be added to the program if you are a winner. 

    #10. Register early - Although the deadline is April1st for most competitions, we are recommending that you don't wait until the last minute to register.  Late and incomplete registrations are subject to a late fee. 



    Call for Volunteers:

    We could use room monitors, help with the info booth, photographers, runners, warm-up room helpers, help at the registration table, and much more!  If you are interested in helping out, please email us, and let us know if you are available to help out.  High School students are eligible for community service hours.

    Chamber Festival

    Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 2 - 6 pm at Oak Valley Middle School

    The Chamber Fest combines flute and/or mixed ensembles in a festival where students play in a recital setting and are adjudicated by professional flutists. There are 6 competitive divisions and ensemble members will be awarded ribbons based on performance evaluations.  There will be a command performance recital to follow the awards ceremony.  Eligibility and guidelines are posted on the event page online, and fees are $10.

    The San Diego Flute Guild invites you to compete in our highly esteemed Young Artist Competition.  There are $1750 worth of prizes awarded to the top three participants.  Flutists must be 18-30, members of the SDFG, and the fee is $50.     Young Artist Competition

    The deadline to submit Young Artist Preliminary Recorded Round is February 26th, 2017.  If you are selected as one of the 6 finalists, you will have the opportunity to perform in the live final round in San Diego on Saturday, April 29th.  There are substantial cash prizes, and an additional winners' recital on Sunday, April 30th during the festival.

    Flute Choirs

    If you are a member of a flute choir, or know of a flute choir that would like an opportunity to perform at the spring festival, please send us an email telling us a little about your group, and we will consider you to perform on our flute choir concerts, and to assist with the flute choir reading sessions.

    • Half Page: $50, 5.25" x 4.215" (Including bleed room).
    • Full Page:  $100, 5.25" by 8.25" (including bleed room).

    Artwork needs to be in the form of a hi-res jpeg (300+dpi), and all jpegs need to be emailed no later than March 12th, 2017.

    Exhibitor Space will be made available on a first come, first served basis and space is limited, and must be confirmed by April 1st, 2017.

    Last year we were not able to accommodate all interested exhibitors and we expect the same this year. If you want to ensure your spot in this event PLEASE register early.

    Winona Grant Holiday Flute Choir Concert

    The San Diego Flute Guild is happy to host the annual Winona Grant Holiday Flute Concert, with two flute choirs sponsored by SDFG.  It is open to any and all flutists and flute choirs... the more the merrier!  We welcome friends, family and flute lovers to attend the concert and help us celebrate the holiday season! It is free to attend the concert (free-will donations welcome).

    SDFG Choir Information:

    • Beginning-Intermediate Choir is open to Elementary and Middle School flutists.
    • Advanced Choir is open to flutists High School age and adults.

    There will be 4 rehearsals prior to the concert:

    • Friday, November 11th, 5:30 to 7:00 PM
    • Friday, November 18th, 5:30 to 7:00 PM
    • Friday, December 2nd, 5:30 to 7:00 PM
    • Saturday, December 17th, 9:00 to 11:00 AM In the sanctuary.

    All Friday rehearsals will meet concurrently in two different rooms at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

    2017 Chamber Fest


    Saturday, January 29th, 2017 ~ 2:00 - 6:00 pm

    We are pleased to announce the 2017 Chamber Fest!  The “Chamber Fest” combines flute and/or mixed ensembles in a festival where students play in a recital setting and are adjudicated by professional flutists.

    Divisions:

    • Elementary (2 or more flutes or mixed instrumentation) –  through 6th Grade
    • Junior Duet (flutes or mixed instrumentation)  – through 9th Grade
    • Junior Large Ensemble – 3 or more instruments (flutes or mixed instrumentation) – through 9th Grade
    • Senior Duet (flutes or mixed instrumentation) – through 12th Grade
    • Senior Larger Ensemble – 3 or more instruments (flutes or mixed instrumentation) – through 12th Grade
    • Adult (2 or more flutes or mixed instrumentation) – non-professional adults

    Adjudication:

    • Adjudication panels include at least one professional flutist.
    • Judges will assign ratings of Superior, Excellent or Good based on the quality of the performance.
    • All judges decisions are final
    Awards / Awards Ceremony / Command Performance:
    • Ensemble members will be awarded ribbons (Superior, Excellent, Good) based on performance evaluation.
    • An Awards Ceremony will be held at the end of the day where ribbons and judges comments will be given
    • A “Command Performance” Recital will follow the Awards Ceremony which will include select “Superior” performances (judges will determine which ensembles will be asked to perform).

    Fees:

    • $10 per person, per ensemble
